Marketing That Matters

If you work with a nonprofit, you know they generally focus on their mission, stakeholders and fundraising. How nonprofits go about their work varies greatly, and I know from experience that marketing campaigns able to do all three at the same time is hard, that’s exactly what the Detroit Harvest Fest & Food Truck Rally was able to do for the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

Just imagine the smell of “fair food” in the air, kids in funny costumes, live music and over 50 Food Trucks – I had a blast. The event even supported a good cause. And that’s when I realized how cool this event really was. It was a welcoming place for the community to gather. Long lines suggested that it was a good day for small business. Best of all, with over 50,000 attendees paying a $5 admission, the charity likely raised a few dollars.

For me, the key takeaway was this; marketing, powered by an intent of “service”, can benefit a company’s bottom line and the community they serve. When marketing evolves to this level, it’s what I call “Marketing That Matters”

Hosted by the nonprofit Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, it was a welcoming place for the community. Lines at every Food Truck suggested it was a good day for small business. And though admission was just $5, at estimates of over 50,000 attendees, I suspect they raised a few dollars for charity.

In today’s divisive world, trust and goodwill are more important than ever (read about this more in my article on “values-based” marketing). I didn’t even know there was a Riverfront Conservancy; now I’m a fan, and I’ll bet there are more like me.

“Marketing That Matters” means proactively seeking opportunities that help you and those around you. People notice it, and in being of service you plant the seed for more sales, more followers, more fans and deeper connections.
